Walking in the West of Ireland

Walking in the West of Ireland is for those who savour nature, clean country air and spectacular scenery, adorned with lakes, rivers and chattering brooks.

All users of mountain and country walks are expected to observe the Country Code:

• Respect the life of the countryside.
• Keep to designated paths.
• Leave no litter.
• Make sure all gates are secured behind you.
• Go carefully on country roads.
• Protect wildlife, wild plants and trees.

Using the roads | Remember on roadways pedestrians should walk on the right, facing oncoming traffic. Cyclists should keep to the left side of the road following the direction of the traffic. Pedestrians should not walk more than two abreast.

Walk 1:

The Old Bog Road:

Estimated duration 1 hour:

This walk starts at the entrance to the pier road, just off the n59 at the entrance to the village of Oughterard. Head towards the lake down the pier road. Take the second turn to the right, the roadway passes along a section of bogland,dotted with bog-cotton, heathers and wild flowers. Further along the route the lake comes into view and then veers towards the hills continuing through an area of bogland where, during the summer, local people can be seen harvesting turf. The bog road joins the main Galway - Oughterard at the cemetery, turning right take the footpath back to the village.

Walk 2:

Toonwee Wood.

Estimated duration: 1 hour 30 mins.

This is a relatively short walk that takes you through coniferous forest. Starting at the church car park heading towards Glann you will find the entrance to the forest approximately 100 metres after the bridge. This walk takes in a short loop of the Western way. Walk for approximately 2.8 km and you will reach a small lake with spectacular scenery of unspoilt bog and moorland. A little further on there is a splendid view of Lough Corrib and the largest island Inchagoill.

Walk 3:

Owenriff Way.

Estimated duration: 1 hour

This walk takes you round the back of the town along the Owenriff River into the townland of Eighterard, over the footbridge along by the Oughterard Angler's moorings and boathouse. Continue down stream through the stile where the path cuts inland to the pier road.

Turn right to return to starting point.

Walk 4:

Aughnanure Castle - Ardnasillagh - Golf Club.

Estimated duration: 2 hours.

Starting at Aughnanure Castle this was the home of the O'Flaherty clan and when open, is well worth a visit. Guided tours are available during the summer. Past the castle, the road continues through the townland of Ardnasillagh. Along this road you are never far from the lake that can be reached by taking a detour. Upon reaching the 'T' junction turn left and follow the road. Taking the next right that leads to the main Galway - Oughterard. Continue on the main road as far as the turn for the golf course. You will pass the scenic Golf course on both your left and your right. Return to starting point.

Walk 5:

Western Way

Estimated duration: 4 hours.

Starting at the Hill of Doon. The western way is a challenge for the walker. The route follows the shore of Lough Corrib to Maam, over open country with a wonderful view of blanket bog. The route takes you high above the lake with superb views of the islands and bays. On a clear day it is possible to see to the far side of the lake and the Cong area.
